Terminal construction previously accepted GhosttyTerminalOptions with
dimensions and one scrollback byte limit. Remove the options struct from
the ABI and make ghostty_terminal_new accept columns and rows directly.
Add byte and line limit options to ghostty_terminal_set and forward them
to the runtime Terminal setters. NULL removes a limit, while zero bytes
disables scrollback. Update type metadata, tests, and all API examples.
This commit represents the majority of the work necessary to upgrade
Ghostty to use Zig 0.16.0.
Key parts:
* In addition to its previous responsibilities, the global state now
houses state for global I/O implementations and the process
environment. It is now also utilized in the main application along
with the C library. Where necessary, global state is isolated from key
parts of the implementation (e.g., in libghostty subsystems), and it's
expected that this list will grow.
* We currently manage our own C translation layer where necessary. In
these cases, cImport has been removed in favor of the new external
translate-c package. Due to fixes that have needed be made to properly
translate the dependencies that were swapped out, as mentioned, we
have had to backport fixes from the current translate-c package (and
the upstream Arocc dependency). We will host this ourselves until Zig
0.17.0 is released with these fixes.
* Where necessary (only a small number of cases), some stdlib code from
0.15.2 (and even from 0.17.0) has been taken, adopted, and vendored in
lib/compat.

Each C API file independently imported ../../lib/allocator.zig as
lib_alloc. Now that terminal/lib.zig re-exports the allocator module
as lib.alloc, use that instead. This removes the redundant import
and keeps all lib dependencies flowing through the single lib.zig
entry point.
The colors_get function used structSizedFieldFits to guard the
palette copy, which required the entire palette array to fit in the
provided size. This prevented partial palette writes when the caller
passed a truncated sized struct, since the guard failed even though
the inner code already handled partial copies correctly. Remove the
outer guard so the existing partial-copy logic applies.
The setopt_from_terminal test expected alt_esc_prefix to be false on
a fresh terminal, but the mode definition in modes.zig sets its
default to true. Update the test expectation to match.
Previously, every call to vt_write created a fresh ReadonlyStream with
new Parser and UTF8Decoder state. This meant escape sequences split
across write boundaries (e.g. ESC in one write, [27m in the next)
would lose parser state, causing the second write to start in ground
state and print the CSI parameters as literal text.
The C API now stores a persistent ReadonlyStream in the TerminalWrapper
struct, which is created when the Terminal is initialized. The vt_write
function feeds bytes through this stored stream, allowing it to maintain
parser state across calls. This change ensures that escape sequences
split across write boundaries are correctly parsed and rendered.
Add focus event encoding (CSI I / CSI O) to the libghostty-vt public
API, following the same patterns as key and mouse encoding.
The focus Event enum uses lib.Enum for C ABI compatibility. The C API
provides ghostty_focus_encode() which writes into a caller-provided
buffer and returns GHOSTTY_OUT_OF_SPACE with the required size when
the buffer is too small.
Also update key and mouse encoders to return GHOSTTY_OUT_OF_SPACE
instead of GHOSTTY_OUT_OF_MEMORY for buffer-too-small errors,
reserving OUT_OF_MEMORY for actual allocation failures. Update all
corresponding header documentation.
Expose the key encoder Options.fromTerminal function to the C API as
ghostty_key_encoder_setopt_from_terminal. This lets C callers sync all
terminal-derived encoding options (cursor key application mode, keypad
mode, alt escape prefix, modifyOtherKeys, and Kitty flags) in a single
call instead of setting each option individually.
This adds a set of Wasm convenience functions to ease memory management.
These are all prefixed with `ghostty_wasm` and are documented as part of
the standard Doxygen docs.
I also added a very simple single-page HTML example that demonstrates
how to use the Wasm module for key encoding.
This also adds a bunch of safety checks to the C API to verify that
valid values are actually passed to the function. This is an easy to hit
bug.
**AI disclosure:** The example is AI-written with Amp. I read through
all the code and understand it but I can't claim there isn't a better
way, I'm far from a JS expert. It is simple and works currently though.
Happy to see improvements if anyone wants to contribute.
This makes `libghostty-vt` build for freestanding wasm targets (aka a
browser) and produce a `ghostty-vt.wasm` file. This exports the same C
API that libghostty-vt does.
This commit specifically makes the changes necessary for the build to
build properly and for us to run the build in CI. We don't yet actually
try using it...
