4a08596314 fix(path): normalize separators (slashes) #39155
Problem:
Continue separators normalization, and try to keep it at the
nvim <-> external boundary, e.g., `fn.xxx`, `api.xxx`, `:xxx`

Solution:
some key changes
- normalize `$HOME-windows`
- normalize entry points of changing directory
  - `nvim_set_current_dir()`, `chdir()`
- normalize the named pipe
  - `--listen` arg, `--server` arg, `:restart`
  - `serverstart()`, `sockconnect()`, `serverstop()`
- make `expand()` respect 'shellslash' again
- clean up `did_set_shellslash`
- replace `forward_slash` with `TO_SLASH`
- remove obsolete `TMP_PATHSEPSTR`
- remove `slash_adjust` in `do_autocmd_dirchanged`?
- make `fnamemodify()` always return `/` (except when substituting
  separators via `:s`, `:gs` ?)

Note:
- these funcs still apply `slash_adjust` on return, as before:
  `:pwd`, `chdir()`, `exepath()`, `getcwd()`
- these funcs alwarys return `/`, unlike before the normalization PRs
  - `getcompletion()`, `finddir()`, `findfile()`

Also
- clean up code, comments, formatting and tests
- move `TO_SLASH` from `f_chdir` to `changedir_func`
- move `TO_SLASH` from `f_bufadd` to `buflist_new`

58b6310adc fix(startup): respect enter for windows created in startup scripts #37287
Problem: When a split window is created from the init script using nvim_open_win()
with enter=false, the current window focus is not preserved. The cursor
incorrectly moves into the newly created split during startup.

Solution: Save curwin before the iteration loop in create_windows(), and
restore it after the loop. also update edit_buffers() to use curwin instead
of firstwin.

47958bb4db fix(:restart): remove -S [file] from v:argv #40521
Problem:
Session files specified at startup `-S [file]`, logically conflict
with `:restart`.

Solution:
Remove `-S [file]` from `v:argv` when doing :restart.
Also for the "bang" variant `:restart!`, just because it's
simpler (if anyone reports a use-case later, we can revisit).

Problem:
`:restart` does not preserve window layout, etc.

Solution:
- Change `:restart` to save/restore a session automatically.
- Introduce "bang" variant `:restart!` to restart *without* session
  save/restore.
- Introduce `v:startreason`.
- `ZR` maps to `:restart!`.

39e9c1754a fix(process): avoid inherited stdio for Windows jobs #40074
Problem:
On Windows, channel jobs inherit Nvim's stdio, so a background job
writing to CON (e.g. gutentags) draws onto the TUI and stays until
redraw.

Solution:
Give Windows job stdin/stderr libuv-created pipes (UV_CREATE_PIPE)
instead of inherited fds, so libuv spawns the child with
CREATE_NO_WINDOW and CON writes no longer leak onto the TUI.

74f163c67d fix(defaults): detect 'background'/'termguicolors' on UI attach #40175
Problem: Terminal background and truecolor detection runs only at startup,
gated on a UI being attached. A headless server has no UI then, so
`'background'` and `'termguicolors'` are never detected and remote
          UIs ignore the terminal's theme.
Solution: Also (re)detect on UIEnter. The most recently attached terminal
wins; an explicit user value is preserved.

f876fd906e test(tui_spec): remove unnecessary job_opts variable (#40334)
This was initially added so that the __NVIM_DETACH environment variable
can be added to the jobs started in this test. That environment variable
is no longer needed, and there is also vim.tbl_extend() that can be used
to add an environment variable to a job anyway.

Also, make a shallow copy of opts.env in setup_child_nvim(), as mutating
the opts.env passed in may mask problems in other tests.

Solution:
Relax the screen test. The `feed_data` + `tty-test` handling is racey;
'statusline' is correctly reporting the line-numbers, and that's all
that matters.

f54b4f15af fix(tui): keep synchronized output active across partial flushes
Problem: when the TUI output buffer is filled during a redraw, flushing
it to the terminal also causes `CSI ? 2026 l` to be emitted, which ends
synchronized output. This causes visible flickering with large redraws.

Solution: track whether a synchronized output is currently active, and
only emit the end sequence on the final flush.

84d5c5f4bf feat(tui): $NVIM_TERMDEFS can override builtin terminfo #39555
Problem:
- Windows users can't use terminfo to configure their terminal
  capabilities. #37274
- Terminfo definitions sometimes get out of date or are simply
  inaccurate.
- Eventually, we may want to drop terminfo, relying primarily on
built-in definitions. Users will still need some flexibility.

Solution:
Support $NVIM_TERMDEFS environment variable, which is JSON data that
defines "terminfo" definitions that override our builtin terminfo.

fff9897ce3 fix(startup): emitting useless OptionSet #39830
Problem:
During startup, we manually trigger a useless and misleading `OptionSet`
event, which doesn't set `v:option_*` values (this is a limitation of
`nvim_exec_autocmds`).
ad4bc2d90c/runtime/lua/vim/_core/defaults.lua (L939).

Solution:
The `nvim_exec_autocmds('OptionSet',…)` call does not serve any purpose
since 5cbb9d613b, so just drop it.

9432e6c1e2 test: run Lua harness with nvim -l
Problem:
The Lua test harness still ran through standalone -ll mode, so tests
depended on the low-level Lua path instead of the regular Nvim Lua
environment. That also meant os.exit() coverage had to carry an ASAN
workaround because Lua's raw process exit skipped Nvim teardown and let
LeakSanitizer interfere with the observed exit code.

Solution:
Run the harness and related fixtures with nvim -l. Patch os.exit() in
the main Lua state to exit through getout(), so scripts observe normal
Nvim shutdown while standalone -ll remains available for generator-style
scripts. As a consequence, the startup test can assert os.exit() without
disabling leak detection.

66149ca668 feat(tui): restore 'ttyfast' to control tty requests #38699
Problem:
When running nvim on a remote machine over SSH, if there is high ping,
then bg detection may not complete in time. This results in a warning
every time nvim is started. #38648

Solution:
Restore 'ttyfast' option and allow it to control whether or not bg
detection is performed. Because this is during startup and before any
user config or commands, we use the environment variable
`NVIM_NOTTYFAST` to allow disabling `ttyfast` during initialization.

f130922744 fix(path): normalize path slashes on Windows #37729
Problem:
On Windows, path separators may become inconsistent for various reasons,
which makes normalization quite painful.

Solution:
Normalize paths to `/` at the entry boundaries and always use it
internally, converting back only in rare cases where `\` is really
needed (e.g. cmd.exe/bat scripts?).

This is the first commit in a series of incremental steps.

Note:
* some funcs won't respect shellslash. e.g. `expand/fnamemodify`
* some funcs still respect shellslash, but will be updated in a follow
  PR. e.g. `ex_pwd/f_chdir/f_getcwd`
* uv's built-in funcs always return `\`. e.g. `uv.cwd/uv.exepath`

28ba068372 feat(:restart): v:starttime, v:exitreason #39282
Problem:
- The `ZR` feature makes it more obvious that we need some sort of flag so that
  an `ExitPre` / `QuitPre` / `VimLeave` handler can handle restarts differently
than a normal exit. For example, it's common that users want `:mksession` on
restart, but perhaps not on a normal exit.
- Nvim has no way to report its "uptime".

Solution:
- Introduce `v:starttime`
- Introduce `v:exitreason`

55f9c2136e test: replace busted with local harness
Replace the busted-based Lua test runner with a repo-local harness.

The new harness runs spec files directly under `nvim -ll`, ships its own
reporter and lightweight `luassert` shim, and keeps the helper/preload
flow used by the functional and unit test suites.

Keep the file boundary model shallow and busted-like by restoring `_G`,
`package.loaded`, `package.preload`, `arg`, and the process environment
between files, without carrying extra reset APIs or custom assertion
machinery.

Update the build and test entrypoints to use the new runner, add
black-box coverage for the harness itself, and drop the bundled
busted/luacheck dependency path.

0ac321a1d6 test: fix s390x failures
Problem:
failures in s390x CI.

Solution:
- runtime/lua/man.lua: parse_path() can return nil but 3 callers didn't handle it.
- skip some tests on s390x.

d5516daf12 fix(:restart): formalize restart event #35223
Problem:
The "restart" event has some problems:
- all UI clients must implement a somewhat complex set of setups
- UI must be on the same machine as the server
- only works for the "current" UI
- race/edge case: If the user config has errors / waiting for input, are
all UIs able to attach while Nvim is waiting for input?

Solution:
- Perform the restart on the server, not the client.
- Pass listen address (instead of CLI args) in the UI event.
- Simplifies UI logic: they only need to attach to new address.
- Opens the door for more enhancements in the future, such as allowing
all UIs to reattach instead of only the "current" UI.

7d6b6b2d14 fix(terminal): don't poll for output during scrollback refresh (#38365)

63642ebf80 refactor(terminal): impl "[Process exited]" in Lua #38343
Problem:
"[Process exited]" is implemented in C with anonymous namespace
and users have no way to hide it.

Solution:
- Handle "TermClose" event in Lua.
- User can delete the "nvim.terminal" augroup to avoid "[Process exited]".
