Problem: Shortening the name of a buffer whose full name is the current
directory + path sep yields empty string -> buf unnamed.
This doesn't interact well with things like `:mksession`, which
for example could `:badd` with no arg -> E471.
Solution: Keep the full path when shortening yields an empty name, as
`path_try_shorten_fname()` already does.
* fix(help): preserve multi-letter CTRL modifiers in :help subject
Problem: After PR 39537 normalized `CTRL-U-default` by excluding
`-` from the trigger char class, the regex `(CTRL%-[^{])([^-_\\])`
also fires between `CTRL-S` and the `H` of the `SHIFT` modifier
in tags like `c_CTRL-SHIFT-V`, splitting it into the non-existent
`c_CTRL-S_HIFT-V`.
Solution: Exclude uppercase letters from the char class so a
multi-letter modifier following `CTRL-X` (e.g. `SHIFT`, `ALT`) is
no longer split. The `-` exclusion from 39537 is preserved so
`i_CTRL-U-default` still works.
* fix(help): escape ~ in expr-=~? exception to keep regex valid
Problem: The `expr-=~?` exception in the tag alias table maps to
`=~?`, but in Vim's regex engine `~` refers to the previous
substitute pattern. With no prior substitute the pattern fails to
compile, so `:help expr-=~?` returns E149 even though the tag exists.
Solution: Escape `~` as \\\~` so the alias expands to a valid
regex (`=\\\~?`) that substring-matches the `expr-=~?` tag. Other
`expr-X?` entries are unaffected since they don't contain `~`.
* fix(help): don't insert _ before CTRL- when preceded by -
Problem: The rule `([^_])CTRL%- -> %1_CTRL-` inserts an underscore
between any non-underscore char and `CTRL-`, which wrongly rewrites
tags like `map-CTRL-C` and `telnet-CTRL-]` (where `CTRL-` is
literal text in the tag, not a key chord).
Solution: Exclude `-` from the trigger char class so a hyphen
immediately before `CTRL-` is preserved. The existing behavior for
`iCTRL-GCTRL-J` -> `i_CTRL-G_CTRL-J` is unaffected because the
`G` before `CTRL-J` is not `-`.
* fix(help): only treat ^X as caret notation for valid control chars
Problem: The regex `%^([^_])` converts any `^X` to `CTRL-X`,
including `:set^=` where `^=` is literal text in the tag, not a
caret-notation control character.
Solution: Restrict the transformation to caret-notation chars
(`%a` or one of `?@[\\]^{}`). This matches the C reference
behavior where `^X` is only converted when X is alphanumeric or one
of the control-notation punctuation chars. `{` is retained so
`^{char}` still maps to the `CTRL-{char}` placeholder tag.
Problem:
The magic globals `it`, `describe`, etc., are more trouble than they are
worth.
- Hooking into `after_each` requires `getfenv()` hacks.
- They confuse luals/emmylua, because the top-level `.luarc.json` isn't
merged with `test/.luarc.json` (apparently a luals limitation?)
- They totally defeat discoverability because the user just has to
"know" about the various magic symbols.
So they harm DX, which means they serve no purpose at all.
Solution:
- Expose the test API from `testutil`, so tests can call `t.it()`,
`t.describe()`, etc., in the conventional way.
- Drop `getfenv()` hacks.
- Drop the `setfenv()` injection in `load_chunk`.
- Drop `test/_meta.lua`.
Problems:
On Windows, `:w somedir` (where somedir is an existing directory
in pwd) shows the misleading `E13: File exists (add ! to override)`
instead of `E17: "somedir" is a directory`.
Solution:
drop unnecessary `#ifdef` guard.
Problem:
- No UI for listing extmarks.
- `:marks` doesn't support cmdline-completion.
Solution:
- Add completion and extmarks support to `:marks`.
- Update `get_buf_local_marks` to include the ":" (prompt-buffer) mark.
Problem:
Continue separators normalization, and try to keep it at the
nvim <-> external boundary, e.g., `fn.xxx`, `api.xxx`, `:xxx`
Solution:
some key changes
- normalize `$HOME-windows`
- normalize entry points of changing directory
- `nvim_set_current_dir()`, `chdir()`
- normalize the named pipe
- `--listen` arg, `--server` arg, `:restart`
- `serverstart()`, `sockconnect()`, `serverstop()`
- make `expand()` respect 'shellslash' again
- clean up `did_set_shellslash`
- replace `forward_slash` with `TO_SLASH`
- remove obsolete `TMP_PATHSEPSTR`
- remove `slash_adjust` in `do_autocmd_dirchanged`?
- make `fnamemodify()` always return `/` (except when substituting
separators via `:s`, `:gs` ?)
Note:
- these funcs still apply `slash_adjust` on return, as before:
`:pwd`, `chdir()`, `exepath()`, `getcwd()`
- these funcs alwarys return `/`, unlike before the normalization PRs
- `getcompletion()`, `finddir()`, `findfile()`
Also
- clean up code, comments, formatting and tests
- move `TO_SLASH` from `f_chdir` to `changedir_func`
- move `TO_SLASH` from `f_bufadd` to `buflist_new`

Problem:
`vim.filetype.match()` needs a cheap way to recognize directory buffers
without doing filesystem stat work.
Solution:
Ensure full buffer names for directories end in a trailing slash. Now
directory buffers can proceed through the normal 'filetype' path.
Note side-effects: session and ShaDa buffer-list restore behavior must
be compatible, so those + corresponding tests must be updated.
Problem:
cmdwin (the `:q` cmdline buffer) has various limitations which require
special-casing all over the codebase.
Besides complicating the code, it also breaks async plugins if they try
to create buffers/windows after some work is done, if the user happens
to open cmdwin at the wrong the moment:
Lua callback: …/guh.nvim/lua/guh/util.lua:531:
E11: Invalid in command-line window; <CR> executes, CTRL-C quits
stack traceback:
[C]: in function 'nvim_buf_delete'
…/guh.nvim/lua/guh/util.lua:531: in function <…/guh.nvim/lua/guh/util.lua:526>
Solution:
Just say no to "inception". Reimplement cmdwin as a normal buffer+window.
All of the cmdwin contortions (in both core, and innocent plugins) exist
literally only to support "inception": recursive
cmdwin-in-cmdline-things, like `<c-r>=`, `/`, search-during-substitute,
`:input()`, etc. So we just won't support that (though I have
a potential plan for that later, which I call "modal parking lot").
The benefit is that plugins, and core, no longer have to care about
cmdwin.
BONUS:
- mouse-drag on vertical separators works (it only worked for
horizontal/statusline before)
- inccommand-in-cmdwin now works correctly, for free (thus don't need
#40077).
POTENTIAL FOLLOWUPS
- Drop `CHECK_CMDWIN` ("E11: Invalid in command-line window"), allow chaos.
- Unify `BUFLOCK_OK` / `LOCK_OK` ?
DESIGN:
- Eliminate lots of C globals, `EX_CMDWIN`, etc.
- `text_locked()` no longer reports true for cmdwin.
- cmdwin = a normal window with 'winfixbuf', 'bufhidden=wipe',
'buftype=nofile'. Invariants come from those options rather than
special cases throughout the codebase.
- `nv_record` for q:/q//q? calls Lua
`nlua_call_vimfn("vim._core.cmdwin", …)`. No `K_CMDWIN`
/ cmdline-reader detour.
- `cedit_key` (`c_CTRL-F`) schedules a deferred event that calls
`vim._core.cmdwin.open(type, content, pos)` and returns `Ctrl_C` so
the in-flight cmdline cancels. Reader state is not serialized; instead
the captured `(type, line, col)` is replayed via
`nvim_feedkeys(type..line.."<CR>", "nt", …)` after user confirms.
- On confirm/cancel: `<CR>` / `<C-C>` calls into Lua which closes the
window and re-feeds the cmdline.
BREAKING CHANGES:
- Expression-register cmdline (`<C-R>=` from insert-mode) no longer
supports cmdwin. Same applies to `input()` / `inputlist()` (already
covered by `text_locked`).
- Usage of cmdwin in macros/mappings will probably break (assuming they
ever worked).
Problem:
Listing individual "skipped" notices for each non-actionable or
NVIM_TEST_INTEG test is noisy and makes the "skipped" list overwhelming
and less meaningful.
Solution:
- Mark non-actionable tests with "N/A".
- Report NVIM_TEST_INTEG tests as a separate 1-line summary.
Define `:packupdate` and `:packdel` as separate commands instead of a
unified `:pack {subcommand}` because the semantics between the two
commands vary differently enough that it doesn't make sense to combine
them. Additionally, `:pack! update/del` looks bad.
Problem:
The fallback that tokenizes `eap->arg` by unescaped whitespace (when the
parser doesn't pre-split via `EX_EXPAND` etc.) lives in `nlua_do_ucmd`,
so only user-command callbacks got `eap.fargs`. Builtin commands routed
through `nlua_call_excmd` have to re-parse the args themselves
(e.g. `M.ex_lsp`).
Solution:
- Move the tokenization into `nlua_push_eap` so every Lua handler sees
`eap.fargs`. Keep only the `EX_NOSPC` override in `nlua_do_ucmd` (the
`nargs=1`/`?` case which is genuinely user-command-specific).
- Drop the re-parse in `M.ex_lsp`.
Problem:
The argument to `:help` is normalized to fit the general tag format.
I.e. i^U-default, iCTRL-U-default and i_CTRL_U-default should all point
to the i_CTRL_U-default tag. Our normalization adds an underscore around
the CTRL keycode, e.g. iCTRL-GCTRL-J becomes i_CTRL-G_CTRL-J. That's not
necessary if the following part starts with a dash, like the case of
iCTRL-U-default.
Solution:
Do not insert an underscore if the following character is a dash/minus
(-).
Problem:
followup to 55ceb314ca#39478
`:oldfiles` and swapfile `:recover` do not delegate to `vim.ui.select`.
Solution:
- Delegate to `vim.ui.select`.
- Fix a long-standing `recover_names` bug where `concat_fnames(dir_name,
files[i], true)` produced malformed `<dir>//<dir>/<file>` paths (also
fixes `swapfilelist()`).
Problem: No message kind and multiple events for :recover and
(non-prompt) swapfile attention messages.
Solution: Assign these the "list_cmd" and "wmsg" kind.
Problem:
On Windows, path separators may become inconsistent for various reasons,
which makes normalization quite painful.
Solution:
Normalize paths to `/` at the entry boundaries and always use it
internally, converting back only in rare cases where `\` is really
needed (e.g. cmd.exe/bat scripts?).
This is the first commit in a series of incremental steps.
Note:
* some funcs won't respect shellslash. e.g. `expand/fnamemodify`
* some funcs still respect shellslash, but will be updated in a follow
PR. e.g. `ex_pwd/f_chdir/f_getcwd`
* uv's built-in funcs always return `\`. e.g. `uv.cwd/uv.exepath`

Problem:
We should not use "\" (backslashes) except where absolutely required.
See references in https://github.com/neovim/neovim/pull/37729
Solution:
There is no reason to use "\" slashes in the trust db, so don't.
Problem:
`vim.secure.trust()` hashes an unchanged empty buffer as
a newline, so trusting an empty file by buffer never works.
Solution:
Hash unchanged empty-buffers `''` so buffer-based
trust matches the on-disk empty file.
Problem: `:write ++patate foo` doesn't error out, instead it turns on
mkdir_p and uses "atate foo" as the filename. Same with ++edit.
The parser just does strncmp without checking what comes after.
Solution: require the next char after the option name to not be a
letter
Although `nlua_call_excmd` is semantically for implementing Ex-commands,
the `require()` should never fail, so that's a "Lua error".
But if the call itself fails (the later `semsg` call), that's an "Ex
cmd" error.
Problem: Normal Windows builtin-TUI startup spawns the embedded server as DETACHED_PROCESS, which breaks Ctrl-C delivery to :terminal jobs.
Solution: Restores the default behavior once the embedded server has a
console so terminal jobs inherit it.
Problem: close_buffer() callers incorrectly handle b_nwindows,
especially after nasty autocmds, allowing it to go
out-of-sync. May lead to buffers that can't be unloaded, or
buffers that are prematurely freed whilst displayed.
Solution: Modify close_buffer() and review its callers; let them
decrement b_nwindows if it didn't unload the buffer. Remove
some now unneeded workarounds like 8.2.2354, 9.1.0143,
9.1.0764, which didn't always work (Sean Dewar)
(endless yapping omitted)
related: vim/vim#19728bf21df1c7b
b_nwindows = 0 change for free_all_mem() was already ported.
Originally Nvim returned true when b_nwindows was decremented before the end was
reached (to better indicate the decrement). That's not needed anymore, so just
return true only at the end, like Vim. (retval isn't used anywhere now anyways)
Set textlock for dict watchers at the end of close_buffer() to prevent them from
switching windows, as that can leave a window with a NULL buffer. (possible
before this PR, but the new assert catches it; added a test)
Despite textlock, things still aren't ideal, as watchers may observe the buffer
as unloaded and hidden (b_nwindows was decremented), yet still in a window...
Likewise, for Nvim, wipe_qf_buffer()'s comment may not be entirely accurate;
autocmds are blocked, but on_detach callbacks (textlocked) and dict watchers may
still run. Might be problematic, but those aren't new issues.

Problem
Unlike inlay hints, code lenses are closely related to running commands;
a significant number of code lenses are used to execute a command (such
as running tests). Therefore, it is necessary to provide a default
mapping for them.
Solution
Add a new default mapping "grx" (mnemonic: "eXecute", like "gx").
Problem:
Right-click menu fails with E335 when using V in Insert mode (after
i_ctrl-o). The mode detection checks restart_edit before VIsual_active,
incorrectly selecting Insert mode binding even when Visual mode is
active.
Solution:
Check Visual mode before Insert mode, to match get_menu_mode() priority
order.
Problem:
"Sorry" in a message (1) is noise, and (2) actually reduces the clarity
of the message because the titlecasing of "Sorry" distracts from the
actually important part of the message.
Solution:
Drop "Sorry" from messages.
Problem:
`K` in help files may fail in some noisy text. Example:
(`fun(config: vim.lsp.ClientConfig): boolean`)
^cursor
Solution:
- `:help!` (bang, no args) activates DWIM behavior: tries `<cWORD>`,
then trims punctuation until a valid tag is found.
- Set `keywordprg=:help!` by default.
- Does not affect `CTRL-]`, that is still fully "tags" based.
Problem: :terminal CWD restoration test may lead to an error log if
after_each() runs before the PTY process calls chdir().
Solution: Wait for some time before wiping the buffer, which can also
prevent SIGHUP being sent to the parent.
Problem:
When a terminal process exits, "[Process Exited]" text is added
to the buffer contents.
Solution:
- Return `exitcode` field from `nvim_get_chan_info`.
- Show it in the default 'statusline'.
- Show exitcode as virtual text in the terminal buffer.
