8b171852a9 feat(api): nvim_echo can emit Progress messages/events #34846
Problem:
Nvim does not have a core concept for indicating "progress" of
long-running tasks. The LspProgress event is specific to LSP.

Solution:
- `nvim_echo` can emit `kind="progress"` messages.
  - Emits a `Progress` event.
  - Includes new fields (id, status, percent) in the `msg_show` ui-event.
  - The UI is expected to overwrite any message having the same id.
- Messages have a globally unique ID.
  - `nvim_echo` returns the message ID.
- `nvim_echo(… {id=…})` updates existing messages.

Example:

    local grp = vim.api.nvim_create_augroup("Msg", {clear = true})
    vim.api.nvim_create_autocmd('Progress', {
      pattern={"term"},
      group = grp,
      callback = function(ev)
        print(string.format('event fired: %s', vim.inspect(ev))..'\n')
      end
    })

    -- require('vim._extui').enable({enable=true, msg={target='msg', timeout=1000}})
    vim.api.nvim_echo({{'searching'}}, true, {kind='progress',  percent=80, status='running', title="terminal(ripgrep)"})
    local id = vim.api.nvim_echo({{'searching'}}, true, {kind='progress', status='running', percent=10, title="terminal(ripgrep)"})
    vim.api.nvim_echo({}, true, {id = id, kind='progress', percent=20, status = 'running', title='find tests'})
    vim.api.nvim_echo({}, true, {id = id, kind='progress', status='running', percent=70})
    vim.api.nvim_echo({{'complete'}}, true, {id = id, kind='progress', status='success', percent=100, title="find tests"})

Followups:
- Integrate with 'statusline' by listening to the Progress autocmd event.
- Integrate progress ui-event with `vim._extui`.

f3c4fec43f vim-patch:9.1.1329: cannot get information about command line completion
Problem: cannot get information about command line completion
Solution: add CmdlineLeavePre autocommand and cmdcomplete_info() Vim
          script function (Girish Palya)

This commit introduces two features to improve introspection and control
over command-line completion in Vim:

- Add CmdlineLeavePre autocmd event:

  A new event triggered just before leaving the command line and before
  CmdlineLeave. It allows capturing completion-related state that is
  otherwise cleared by the time CmdlineLeave fires.

- Add cmdcomplete_info() Vim script function:

  Returns a Dictionary with details about the current command-line
  completion state.

These are similar in spirit to InsertLeavePre and complete_info(),
but focused on command-line mode.

**Use case:**

In [[PR vim/vim#16759](https://github.com/vim/vim/pull/16759)], two examples
demonstrate command-line completion: one for live grep, and another for
fuzzy file finding. However, both examples share two key limitations:

1. **Broken history recall (`<Up>`)**
   When selecting a completion item via `<Tab>` or `<C-n>`, the original
pattern used for searching (e.g., a regex or fuzzy string) is
overwritten in the command-line history. This makes it impossible to
recall the original query later.
   This is especially problematic for interactive grep workflows, where
it’s useful to recall a previous search and simply select a different
match from the menu.

2. **Lack of default selection on `<CR>`**
   Often, it’s helpful to allow `<CR>` (Enter) to accept the first match
in the completion list, even when no item is explicitly selected. This
behavior is particularly useful in fuzzy file finding.

----
Below are the updated examples incorporating these improvements:

**Live grep, fuzzy find file, fuzzy find buffer:**

```vim
command! -nargs=+ -complete=customlist,GrepComplete Grep VisitFile()
def GrepComplete(arglead: string, cmdline: string, cursorpos: number):
list<any>
    return arglead->len() > 1 ? systemlist($'grep -REIHns "{arglead}"' ..
       ' --exclude-dir=.git --exclude=".*" --exclude="tags" --exclude="*.swp"') : []
enddef
def VisitFile()
    if (selected_match != null_string)
        var qfitem = getqflist({lines: [selected_match]}).items[0]
        if qfitem->has_key('bufnr') && qfitem.lnum > 0
            var pos = qfitem.vcol > 0 ? 'setcharpos' : 'setpos'
            exec $':b +call\ {pos}(".",\ [0,\ {qfitem.lnum},\ {qfitem.col},\ 0]) {qfitem.bufnr}'
            setbufvar(qfitem.bufnr, '&buflisted', 1)
    var altbuf = bufs->indexof((_, v) => v =~ '^\s*\d\+\s\+#')
    if altbuf != -1
        [bufs[0], bufs[altbuf]] = [bufs[altbuf], bufs[0]]
```vim
set wim=noselect:lastused,full wop=pum wcm=<C-@> wmnu
autocmd CmdlineChanged : CmdComplete()

            && cmdline =~ '\%(\w\|[*/:.-]\)$' && cmdline !~ '^\d\+$'  # Reduce noise
        feedkeys("\<C-@>", "ti")
        SkipCmdlineChanged() # Suppress redundant completion attempts
        # Remove <C-@> that get inserted when no items are available
        timer_start(0, (_) => getcmdline()->substitute('\%x00', '', 'g')->setcmdline())
    endif
enddef
cnoremap <expr> <up> SkipCmdlineChanged("\<up>")
cnoremap <expr> <down> SkipCmdlineChanged("\<down>")
autocmd CmdlineEnter : set bo+=error
autocmd CmdlineLeave : set bo-=error
def SkipCmdlineChanged(key = ''): string
    set ei+=CmdlineChanged
    timer_start(0, (_) => execute('set ei-=CmdlineChanged'))
    return key != '' ? ((pumvisible() ? "\<c-e>" : '') .. key) : ''
enddef
```
These customizable snippets can serve as *lightweight* and *native*
alternatives to picker plugins like **FZF** or **Telescope** for common,
everyday workflows. Also, live grep snippet can replace **cscope**
without the overhead of building its database.
82a215cb2d feat(options): add 'eventignorewin' (#32152)
vim-patch:partial:9.1.1084: Unable to persistently ignore events in a window and its buffers
Problem:  Unable to persistently ignore events in a window and its buffers.
Solution: Add 'eventignorewin' option to ignore events in a window and buffer
          (Luuk van Baal)
Add the window-local 'eventignorewin' option that is analogous to
'eventignore', but applies to a certain window and its buffers. Identify
events that should be allowed in 'eventignorewin', adapt "auto_event"
and "event_tab" to encode this information. Window context is not passed
onto apply_autocmds_group(), and when to ignore an event is a bit
ambiguous when "buf" is not "curbuf", rather than a large refactor, only
ignore an event when all windows into "buf" are ignoring the event.
e5e0bda41b feat(lsp)!: add vim.lsp.status, client.progress and promote LspProgressUpdate (#23958)
`client.messages` could grow unbounded because the default handler only
added new messages, never removing them.
A user either had to consume the messages by calling
`vim.lsp.util.get_progress_messages` or by manually removing them from
`client.messages.progress`. If they didn't do that, using LSP
effectively leaked memory.
To fix this, this deprecates the `messages` property and instead adds a
`progress` ring buffer that only keeps at most 50 messages. In addition
it deprecates `vim.lsp.util.get_progress_messages` in favour of a new
`vim.lsp.status()` and also promotes the `LspProgressUpdate` user
autocmd to a regular autocmd to allow users to pattern match on the
progress kind.
58618d208a feat(lsp)!: promote LspRequest to a full autocmd and enrich with additional data (#23694)
BREAKING CHANGE: LspRequest is no longer a User autocmd but is now a
first class citizen.
LspRequest as a User autocmd had limited functionality. Namely, the only
thing you could do was use the notification to do a lookup on all the
clients' requests tables to figure out what changed.
Promoting the autocmd to a full autocmd lets us set the buffer the
request was initiated on (so people can set buffer-local autocmds for
listening to these events).
Additionally, when used from Lua, we can pass additional metadata about
the request along with the notification, including the client ID, the
request ID, and the actual request object stored on the client's
requests table. Users can now listen for these events and act on them
proactively instead of polling all of the requests tables and looking
for changes.
cb757f2663 build: make generated source files reproducible #21586
Problem:
Build is not reproducible, because generated source files (.c/.h/) are not
deterministic, mostly because Lua pairs() is unordered by design (for security).
https://github.com/LuaJIT/LuaJIT/issues/626#issuecomment-707005671
https://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/manual.html#pdf-next
> The order in which the indices are enumerated is not specified [...]
>
>> The hardening of the VM deliberately randomizes string hashes. This in
>> turn randomizes the iteration order of tables with string keys.
Solution:
- Update the code generation scripts to be deterministic.
    - That is only a partial solution: the exported function
      (funcs_metadata.generated.h) and ui event
      (ui_events_metadata.generated.h) metadata have some mpack'ed
      tables, which are not serialized deterministically.
    - As a workaround, introduce `PRG_GEN_LUA` cmake setting, so you can
      inject a modified build of luajit (with LUAJIT_SECURITY_PRN=0)
      that preserves table order.
    - Longer-term we should change the mpack'ed data structure so it no
      longer uses tables keyed by strings.
2ffafc7aa9 feat(lsp): add LspAttach and LspDetach autocommands
The current approach of using `on_attach` callbacks for configuring
buffers for LSP is suboptimal:
1. It does not use the standard Nvim interface for driving and hooking
   into events (i.e. autocommands)
2. There is no way for "third parties" (e.g. plugins) to hook into the
   event. This means that *all* buffer configuration must go into the
   user-supplied on_attach callback. This also makes it impossible for
   these configurations to be modular, since it all must happen in the
   same place.
3. There is currently no way to do something when a client detaches from
   a buffer (there is no `on_detach` callback).
The solution is to use the traditional method of event handling in Nvim:
autocommands. When a LSP client is attached to a buffer, fire a
`LspAttach`. Likewise, when a client detaches from a buffer fire a
`LspDetach` event.
This enables plugins to easily add LSP-specific configuration to buffers
as well as enabling users to make their own configurations more modular
(e.g. by creating multiple LspAttach autocommands that each do
something unique).
            return type for some functions.  Insert "(void *)" to get rid of
            the remaining warnings.
"enter"/"leave" is more conventional for Vim events, and
"attach"/"detach" distinction does not gain much.
