6ea01d37f8 refactor(core): group insert-mode globals in InsState #40712
Problem:
Insert-mode globals are scattered.

Solution:
Group them into one struct. Besides improving readability and
discoverability, this greatly helps with save/restore of an insert-mode
session.

81c4c295ac refactor(insert): rename edit.c => insert.c #40705
Problem:
- `edit.c` is an unnecessarily misleading and less-discoverable name
  than `insert.c`.
- Numerous insert-mode related things are named with a `ins_` prefix.
- There is already a `insexpand.c` module...

Solution:
Rename `edit.c` => `insert.c`.

d25ae8b8c2 refactor(input): rename getchar.c => input.c #40698
Problem:
`getchar.c` is a quirky name and doesn't align with our existing
`os/input.c` and `tui/input.c` modules, which encompass the same topic
at different layers.

Solution:
Rename `getchar.c` => `input.c` for discoverability.

Introduce `dialog.c` for functionality related to showing confirm
prompts, dialogs, etc.

845b66dd4a feat(:restart)!: ":restart" (no bang) saves/restores session #40321
Problem:

Solution:

- Introduce `v:startreason`.
- `ZR` maps to `:restart!`.

b2bf7bcfb1 feat(cmdwin): implement cmdwin as a normal buf+win
Problem:

cmdwin (the `:q` cmdline buffer) has various limitations which require
special-casing all over the codebase.

Besides complicating the code, it also breaks async plugins if they try
to create buffers/windows after some work is done, if the user happens
to open cmdwin at the wrong the moment:

    Lua callback: …/guh.nvim/lua/guh/util.lua:531:
    E11: Invalid in command-line window; <CR> executes, CTRL-C quits
    stack traceback:
        [C]: in function 'nvim_buf_delete'
        …/guh.nvim/lua/guh/util.lua:531: in function <…/guh.nvim/lua/guh/util.lua:526>

Solution:

Just say no to "inception". Reimplement cmdwin as a normal buffer+window.

All of the cmdwin contortions (in both core, and innocent plugins) exist
literally only to support "inception": recursive
cmdwin-in-cmdline-things, like `<c-r>=`, `/`, search-during-substitute,
`:input()`, etc. So we just won't support that (though I have
a potential plan for that later, which I call "modal parking lot").

The benefit is that plugins, and core, no longer have to care about
cmdwin.

BONUS:
- mouse-drag on vertical separators works (it only worked for
  horizontal/statusline before)
- inccommand-in-cmdwin now works correctly, for free (thus don't need
  #40077).

POTENTIAL FOLLOWUPS
- Drop `CHECK_CMDWIN` ("E11: Invalid in command-line window"), allow chaos.
- Unify `BUFLOCK_OK` / `LOCK_OK` ?

DESIGN:
- Eliminate lots of C globals, `EX_CMDWIN`, etc.
- `text_locked()` no longer reports true for cmdwin.
- cmdwin = a normal window with 'winfixbuf', 'bufhidden=wipe',
  'buftype=nofile'. Invariants come from those options rather than
  special cases throughout the codebase.
- `nv_record` for q:/q//q? calls Lua
  `nlua_call_vimfn("vim._core.cmdwin", …)`. No `K_CMDWIN`
  / cmdline-reader detour.
- `cedit_key` (`c_CTRL-F`) schedules a deferred event that calls
  `vim._core.cmdwin.open(type, content, pos)` and returns `Ctrl_C` so
  the in-flight cmdline cancels. Reader state is not serialized; instead
  the captured `(type, line, col)` is replayed via
  `nvim_feedkeys(type..line.."<CR>", "nt", …)` after user confirms.
- On confirm/cancel: `<CR>` / `<C-C>` calls into Lua which closes the
  window and re-feeds the cmdline.

BREAKING CHANGES:
- Expression-register cmdline (`<C-R>=` from insert-mode) no longer
  supports cmdwin. Same applies to `input()` / `inputlist()` (already
  covered by `text_locked`).
- Usage of cmdwin in macros/mappings will probably break (assuming they
  ever worked).

257701b17b vim-patch:9.2.0689: the "%" command is slow on a long line with many slashes (#40361)
Problem: The "%" command can be very slow on a long line that contains
          many slashes, for example a line of base64 data.
Solution: When looking for a line comment, scan the line only once while
          skipping over strings, instead of rescanning from the start for
          every slash. Move check_linecomment() to cindent.c so it can
          reuse the file-local skip_string().

e997599894 vim-patch:9.2.0640: the "%" command jumps to parens and braces inside comments (#40229)
Problem: The "%" command jumps to parens and braces inside comments,
          unlike the "=" operator (cindent), which ignores them.
Solution: When 'comments' defines C-style comments and "%" is not in
          'cpoptions', skip matching parens inside such comments, except
          when the cursor is inside a comment so a match there can still
          be found.

16f7440cc7 feat(help): super K (":help!") guesses tag at cursor #36205

- Set `keywordprg=:help!` by default.
- Does not affect `CTRL-]`, that is still fully "tags" based.

911337eb3c fix(normal): crash using :norm from vim.ui_attach shell message event #38283
Problem: 'showcmd' buffer is being populated for :norm commands, which
          can result in a recursive uv_run() when called from a msg_show

Solution: The 'showcmd' buffer is never displayed while executing a

29fa072b34 vim-patch:partial:9.2.0126: String handling can be improved (#38214)
Problem: String handling can be improved
Solution: Pass string length where it is known to avoid strlen() calls,
          do a few minor refactors (John Marriott).

This commit changes some calls to function `set_vim_var_string()` to pass
the string length where it is known or can be easily calculated.

In addition:
In `evalvars.c`:
  * In function `set_reg_var()` turn variable `regname` into a C string
    because that is how it used.
  * Small cosmetics.
In `option.c`:
  * Slightly refactor function `apply_optionset_autocmd()` to move some
    variables closer to where they are used.
In `getchar.c`:
  * Slightly refactor function `do_key_input_pre()`:
    -> change call to `dict_add_string()` to `dict_add_string_len()` and
       pass it the length of `buf`.
    -> only call `get_vim_var_string()` once.
In `message.c`:
  * Use a `string_T` to store local variable `p`.
In `normal.c`:
  * Move some variables closer to where they are used.

97549ad7cf feat(ui): specify whether msg_show event comes from typed command
Problem: Unable to tell whether a msg_show event is emitted as a result
          a command typed on the cmdline (UI may want to represent these
          differently from other messages).
Solution: Add trigger parameter that is set to "typed_cmd" for

          Possible extensions are mapping/timer/event but it's hard to

a04c73cc17 fix(input): discard following keys when discarding <Cmd>/K_LUA (#36498)
Technically the current behavior does match documentation. However, the
keys following <Cmd>/K_LUA aren't normally received by vim.on_key()
callbacks either, so it does makes sense to discard them along with the
preceding key.

One may also argue that vim.on_key() callbacks should instead receive
the following keys together with the <Cmd>/K_LUA, but doing that may
cause some performance problems, and even in that case the keys should
still be discarded together.

50ceac4054 vim-patch:9.1.1625: Autocompletion slow with include- and tag-completion (#35318)
