02b0c80422 fix(lua): blast radius of broken _G.debug #41507
Problem:
`nlua_pcall()` references `_G.debug.traceback`. If user code deletes it
or breaks it some other way, various Lua features are broken.

    _G.debug = nil
    vim.schedule(function() end)
    vim.wait(100)

    E5113: Lua chunk: attempt to index a nil value
    stack traceback:
            [C]: in function 'loop_poll'
            [string "vim/_core/editor"]:176: in function 'wait'
            crash.lua:3: in main chunk
    PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (attempt to index a nil value)

Solution:
Check `_G.debug.traceback` before using it as errfunc. If it's broken,
omit the traceback and say so in the error message.

Note: We could cache `_G.debug` in LUA_REGISTRYINDEX on startup, but
that would prevent plugins from providing custom functionality there
(and we happen to do so in `tui_spec.lua` for example).

e7ae1b3c10 fix(ui2): cmdwin is not special #41508
Problem:
Unreliable ui2 test:

    FAILED   …/ui/messages2_spec.lua @ 277: messages2 multiline messages and pager
    …/ui/messages2_spec.lua:277: Row 1 did not match.
    Expected:
      ...
      |*{1::}echo "foo" | echo "bar\nbaz\n"->repeat(&lines)      |
      |*{1::}messages                                            |
      |*{1::}^                                                    |
      ...
    Actual:
      ...
      |*{9:vim.schedule callback: ...ork/neovim/neovim/runt [+7]}|

Solution:
ui2 is doing contortions to handle the old cmdwin behavior; stop doing
that, it's no longer necessary since b2bf7bcfb1.

fb5d466a35 fix(help): :helptags on CRLF helpfiles
Problem:
The vimdoc parser does not treat "\r" as whitespace, so in a CRLF
helpfile the codeblock rule fails and "*" pairs inside examples become
tags. On Windows this generates duplicate "." and "/" tags:

    D:/a/neovim/neovim/build/bin/nvim.exe -u NONE -i NONE -e --headless -c "helptags ++t doc" -c "exe 'cquit' !empty(v:errmsg)""
    Error in command line:
    E154: Duplicate tag "." in gui.txt and repeat.txt
    E154: Duplicate tag "/" in pattern.txt and usr_08.txt
    E154: Duplicate tag "/" in usr_08.txt and pattern.txt

Note: The old C parser was unaffected because it read helpfiles in text
mode (`os_fopen(…, "r")`).

Solution:
Strip "\r" before parsing.

1ef030f162 fix(help): :helptags regressions
Problem:
Parent commit regressed some behavior of the old C helptags-gen impl:
- helpfiles in sub-directories are named by basename, so :help fails
- "help-tags" always names "tags", never "tags-nl"
- E150 E151 E152 E153 are never reported
- existing tags file is not overwritten if no tags were found
- a duplicate tag aborts the run, skipping the remaining directories
- `*.TXT` and `*.FRX` (uppercase) are not recognized as helpfiles
- tree-sitter-vimdoc accepts tags that the C parser rejected: `*a|b*`
  (breaks |links|) and unterminated `*tag`
- PUC Lua "<" compares with (localized) `strcoll()`, so the tags file is
  not sorted by byte value (E432)
- requiring `vim.treesitter` at load time breaks :help itself, not just
  :helptags, where the module is unavailable
- `vim.pack` runs :helptags for plugins that have no "doc/" directory,
  so every install/update emits E150

Solution:
- Fail the build if generating helptags reports any `v:errmsg`.
- Restore old behavior: tags generated for runtime/doc are now identical
  to those from the C implementation. Errors are non-fatal messages
  instead of exceptions, so all directories are still processed.
- Load treesitter lazily, report a plain error if parser is missing.

b36b3d7f3a feat(help): generate :helptags using Treesitter
Problem:
Tags are manually parsed in C which is not flexible and prone to errors.
Extending the help system to allow for other formats (e.g. Markdown)
would require a large rewrite in the C core, while with Treesitter it
only needs a query update.

Solution:
Use the power of treesitter to extract the tags from helpfiles.

- build: set `$VIMRUNTIME` when generating helptags, like
  `cmake/Util.cmake` already does for other generators.
- fix(help): only accept tags delimited by whitespace. The old C parser
  only accepted a `*tag*` preceded by start-of-line or whitespace and
  followed by whitespace or end-of-line. The vimdoc parser also captures
  tags followed by other text, e.g. `*$XDG_STATE_HOME*/.../logs` in
  starting.txt, which caused an E154 duplicate tag error for docs that
  were previously fine.

a1de07418b feat(ui2): lift ui2 options into 'messagesopt' (part 1) #41474
Problem:
In order for ui2 to graduate to the main "messages ui" its configuration
needs to graduate into actual options.

Solution:
Migrate some of its config to 'messagesopt':
- "maxheight" (note: currently this is an integer treated as
  a "percentage"; if we want to support a row count we could allow
  values with units, like `"42%"`)
- "pager"
- "timeout"

Also improves error messages:

    messagesopt=hit-enter,history:500,bogus       E474: Unknown item 'bogus'
    messagesopt=hit-enter,history:500,progress:x  E474: 'progress' must be one of: , c
    messagesopt=hit-enter,history:abc             E474: 'history' requires a number

510f61555b fix(ui2): pager_char does not match keycode aliases #41468
Problem:
`pager_char` compares the `keytrans()` result exactly. E.g. `pager_char

Solution:
Normalize `pager_char` in enable().

8c440c469b fix(ui2): ui2 misinterprets getchar() input as pager_char (CR) #41465
Problem:
`vim.on_key()` callbacks are invoked for keys that `getchar()` consumes,
which never reach the main loop, and there is no way to tell such a key
apart. With ui2 the `on_key` handler activated after interactive
cmdline, handles it as `pager_char` (thus enters the ui2 pager).

Solution:
Skip `vim.on_key()` callbacks during `getchar()`/`getcharstr()`.

716835c232 fix(ui2): dismiss msgs after mapped motions #41450
Problem:
Mapped keys can produce on_key callbacks with an empty `typed` value.
so mapped motions such as `j -> gj` are not recognized as typed input
and do not dismiss messages

Solution:
Track whether an empty `typed` callback follows typed input, allowing
mapped motions to dismiss messages like directly typed motions.

8d406ed2ac fix(defaults): emit events on automatic background change #41242
Problem:
After #40270, events are no longer emitted from the automatic background
detection. This applies not just during startup, but also if the user
manually changes the background of their terminal.

Solution:
Set the background as normal, assuming that a normal terminal will
respond within 100 ms. Change test to match expected behavior:
- BG set during startup won't trigger user autocmds since it runs before
  any user config
- If the terminal takes longer than 100 ms to respond to initial OSC 11,
  it does trigger the OptionSet, but it is triggered through the normal
  path to ensure values like v:option_new are set #38551
- BG change after startup still triggers autocmds #41146

2e0a5a596a fix(terminal): spawn in effective CWD #41211
Problem:
`:terminal` does not respect the invocation-time CWD.
This wasn't noticeable with `:lcd` because the window-local CWD gets
applied to the new terminal buffer. But it is noticeable with `:bcd`.

1c1dc0558f feat(cwd): support explicit chdir (:bcd/:tcd/…) in temp context
Problem:
- Explicit `:bcd` (etc.) persists from `nvim_buf_call()` but not from an
  autocmd handler targeting a hidden buf (`LspAttach`, `TermRequest`, …),
  which needs a `vim.schedule()` workaround.
- `vim._with()` is supposed to work as a "sandbox", discarding
  side-effects, but it leaks CWD changes: `:lcd` from a `win` context,
  any chdir from a visible-buffer context.

Solution:
- Explicit :cd/:tcd/:bcd during a temp context persists by default.
  - "Ambient" directory changes ('autochdir', existing win-local CWD,
    etc.) are still undone, as before.
- Add `kCtxKeepDirs`: snapshot/restore the target's full CWD state
  (w/b/tp-local, global, cwd). Used by `vim._with()` and `'inccommand'`,
  which must not leak state.

ab80ea92cc fix(ui2): pager handling #41179
- Avoid shared state. Pass `focus` to set_pos()/expand_msg() instead of
  a shared `pager_focus` flag: the flag is only cleared when set_pos()
  actually enters the pager, so ":messages" from inside the pager left
  it set.
- pager_shown(): the pager window is invalid after leaving it with "q".
- Reuse pager_shown() in expand_msg().

a29a9130a9 fix(ui2): do not steal focus when consecutive cmds emit messages #41062
Problem: A message emitted while a previous expanded message is still
          visible opens the pager and enters it, moving focus away from
          the buffer window without an explicit request (#41061).
Solution: Only enter the pager when it was explicitly requested ("g<",
          :messages, or entered from the expanded cmdline). An unfocused
          pager is dismissed by the cmdline key handler, which stays armed
          across the cmdline and no longer dismisses on non-typed keys
          (#39221).

726d1a92d2 feat(options): lua closure/function options
Problem:
Cannot assign Lua functions/closures to "func" ('completefunc',
'tagfun', …) or "expr" ('foldexpr', 'indentexpr', …) options.

Solution:
- Store "func"/"expr" options as `Callback` instead of string.
- Delete oceans of copy-pasted code.
- BREAKING: LuaRef returned via RPC/Vimscript is now represented as
  `"<Lua N: file:line>"` (like what `:map` shows) instead of `nil`.
- Note: `man.vim` still uses `v:lua` string, bc it's a vimscript ftplugin.

359459dec6 refactor(exmode): Ex-mode as cmdwin + Lua #40991
Problem:
POSIX-compatible Ex-mode requires special-cases all over the codebase to
match various quirks that don't actually matter to users.
- The main utility of *interactive* Ex-mode is its REPL behavior, and
  that can be achieved with `cmdwin`, which also gains extra UX
  benefits.
- The main utility of *non-interactive* `nvim -es` is for shell
  scripting, where Ex-mode quirks are mostly unhelpful (e.g. the
  "Entering Ex mode" message).

Solution:
- Reimplement *interactive* Ex-mode as a "persistent, insert-mode
  cmdwin" in Lua.
  - "nvim -e/-E" is simply an alias to "gQ".
- Reframe *non-interactive* Ex-mode (`nvim -es`) as "script mode".
  - Drop POSIX Ex-mode quirks.

Improvements:
- "nvim -V1 -es" output ends with a final newline!
- "nvim -V1 -es" no longer shows the "Entering Ex mode" msg. (This was
  pointless noise, unwanted for scripting purposes.)
- stdin is no longer typeahead. Scripts (":lua io.read()") can read
  stdin as data.
- Empty line is a no-op: a stray blank line no longer moves the cursor
  (deviates from POSIX ex "+1"), no longer exits 1 at EOF (E501).

Preserved behavior:
- cursor starts at "$"
- mode()=="cv" (for non-interactive)
- multiline commands (:append/:function/heredoc pull continuation lines)
- bare-range print
- :print=>stdout
- -V1=>stderr
- CRLF input
- continue-after-error and exit codes

Dropped (regressed) POSIX behavior (non-interactive):
- Event loop only ticks while/between commands, not while blocked
  waiting for a stdin line.
- ":g/pat/visual...Q"
- input()/getchar()/":s/x/y/c" no longer consume stdin lines as
  answers: Nvim stops at end-of-input, skipping the rest of the script,
  exit 0. Use ":lua io.read()" instead.
  - If users care about this they should use interactive Ex-mode (`gQ`).
- ":@r" stops at end of the register instead of continuing to read
  cmdline input from stdin.

c57818bb43 fix(ui2): avoid flickering fileinfo messages #41002
## Flicker cause

ui2's `check_targets()` function creates the hidden ui2 windows with this call chain:
```
nvim_open_win()
win_set_buf()
do_buffer()
set_curbuf()
enter_buffer()
```

and `enter_buffer()` sets `need_fileinfo`:

fdc09be03c/src/nvim/buffer.c (L1837-L1839)

This is then picked up by `normal_redraw`:

fdc09be03c/src/nvim/normal.c (L1381-L1385)

The fileinfo message then causes a ui2 window to appear to display it:

fdc09be03c/runtime/lua/vim/_core/ui2/messages.lua (L325-L330)

... which ends up calling `set_pos`, which registers an `on_key` handler:

fdc09be03c/runtime/lua/vim/_core/ui2/messages.lua (L726-L728)

This handler closes the ui2 window when the user presses, for example, `l` (because the user's not focusing said window).
The handler eventually calls `check_targets()`:

fdc09be03c/runtime/lua/vim/_core/ui2/messages.lua (L594-L595)

and `check_targets()` takes us back to the beginning, causing the ui2 window flicker

## Repro

```vim
=require("vim._core.ui2").enable()
set ch=0 shm-=F ve=all
e /tmp/x
```

Then hit `Ctrl-G` to show fileinfo (if not already shown) and hold `l`

## Fix

Effectively surround the ui2 window creating with `:silent`

f8cfd7f06a feat(options): schema, "dict" options, messages
Problem:
Options parsing is still painful for dict-style options.

Solution:
schema-maxxing => better `opt:get()` (will be the basis for `vim.o()`),
unified (and more-detailed) err msgs.

- Drop bespoke structure-builder in `_core/options.lua`.
- Define `schema` for all non-primitive options (except 'guicursor' and
  statusline-style options); generate reified keysets `OptKeyDict`).
  - Generate 'fillchars' => `fcs_tab`, 'listchars' => `lcs_tab`.
- `nvim_set_option_value`:
  - Return the improved structures. Also from `vim.opt.x:get()`.
  - Eliminate api <=> lua roundtrip, centralize option structure
    handling.
- Improve/unify errors.
  - Bump ERR_BUFLEN 80 → 256 so the "one of" list isn't truncated.
- Eliminate old 'diffopt' order-dependence (`iwhiteall` before `iwhite`)

Error samples:

526365a8d1 fix(help): handle escape edge cases #40901
* fix(help): preserve multi-letter CTRL modifiers in :help subject

Problem: After PR 39537 normalized `CTRL-U-default` by excluding
`-` from the trigger char class, the regex `(CTRL%-[^{])([^-_\\])`
also fires between `CTRL-S` and the `H` of the `SHIFT` modifier
in tags like `c_CTRL-SHIFT-V`, splitting it into the non-existent
`c_CTRL-S_HIFT-V`.

Solution: Exclude uppercase letters from the char class so a
multi-letter modifier following `CTRL-X` (e.g. `SHIFT`, `ALT`) is
no longer split. The `-` exclusion from 39537 is preserved so
`i_CTRL-U-default` still works.

* fix(help): escape ~ in expr-=~? exception to keep regex valid

Problem: The `expr-=~?` exception in the tag alias table maps to
`=~?`, but in Vim's regex engine `~` refers to the previous
substitute pattern. With no prior substitute the pattern fails to
compile, so `:help expr-=~?` returns E149 even though the tag exists.

Solution: Escape `~` as \\\~` so the alias expands to a valid
regex (`=\\\~?`) that substring-matches the `expr-=~?` tag. Other
`expr-X?` entries are unaffected since they don't contain `~`.

* fix(help): don't insert _ before CTRL- when preceded by -

Problem: The rule `([^_])CTRL%- -> %1_CTRL-` inserts an underscore
between any non-underscore char and `CTRL-`, which wrongly rewrites
tags like `map-CTRL-C` and `telnet-CTRL-]` (where `CTRL-` is
literal text in the tag, not a key chord).

Solution: Exclude `-` from the trigger char class so a hyphen
immediately before `CTRL-` is preserved. The existing behavior for
`iCTRL-GCTRL-J` -> `i_CTRL-G_CTRL-J` is unaffected because the
`G` before `CTRL-J` is not `-`.

* fix(help): only treat ^X as caret notation for valid control chars

Problem: The regex `%^([^_])` converts any `^X` to `CTRL-X`,
including `:set^=` where `^=` is literal text in the tag, not a
caret-notation control character.

Solution: Restrict the transformation to caret-notation chars
(`%a` or one of `?@[\\]^{}`). This matches the C reference
behavior where `^X` is only converted when X is alphanumeric or one
of the control-notation punctuation chars. `{` is retained so
`^{char}` still maps to the `CTRL-{char}` placeholder tag.

a2dfa195b2 feat(lua): vim.keycode() gets structured parse result #38636
Problems:
1. Can't get individual parts of a key-chord separately: modifiers, key.
2. Can't separate a key-combo into individual key-chords.

Solution:
Enhance `vim.keycode()` to optionally return a structured parse result
as a list of key-chords:
- `key_raw` the key-chord (problem 2)
- `mod` the modifiers of `key_raw` (problem 1)
- `key_orig` the key part of the key-chord, only here if differing from `key`

  useful and it's (in terms of code) free)

e0e7f65b74 refactor(detach): eliminate nvim__ui_detach #40793
Problem:
`nvim__ui_detach` was added in 85e0559d46 in order to implement
`detach_others` from Lua. Using Lua in this case is doing more harm than
good.

Solution:
Extract `ui_detach_channel`, which also allows it to be used for the
"self detach" path from `ex_detach`.

Bonus: the old MSWIN path always called `os_swap_to_hidden_console()`;
now `ui_detach_channel` only does so for a stdio channel. For the common
stdio TUI this is identical; for a socket UI it's more correct (no
parent console to swap).

85e0559d46 feat(ui): ":%detach!" detaches all other UIs #39216
Problem:
Not easy for one UI to kick the others off a shared Nvim server.

Solution:
Treat `:%detach` as detach-other-UIs.

671e9d4913 feat(marks): :marks completion, list extmarks #40743
Problem:
- No UI for listing extmarks.
- `:marks` doesn't support cmdline-completion.

Solution:
- Add completion and extmarks support to `:marks`.
- Update `get_buf_local_marks` to include the ":" (prompt-buffer) mark.

0ffd74ae85 fix(ui2): fix ruler on repeated messages
Problem: a long message is cropped to keep the ruler visible. But when
the message is repeated, it can be written over the ruler, while the
repetition indicator "(1)" is still placed just before the ruler, which
ends up somewhere inside the message.

Solution: currently, long messages are only cropped when setting the
'last' virttext. Make sure this happens after a repeated long message.

fcc391d89a fix(ui2): clear showcmd virt_text together with search count
Problem: when the search count is displayed, the showcmd virt_text is
set to 11 empty spaces to ensure a consistent distance between search
count and ruler, or screen edge in case of noruler. But when the search
count is removed to make place for a message, the empty dummy showcmd
remains and unnecessarily erases part of the message.

Solution: properly remove showcmd together with search count.

fce6d9a549 feat(lua): add cwd context to vim._with() #40653
Problem: No concise way to execute a callback with temporarily set

  directory.

Solution: Add `cwd` context to `vim._with().`

ce718e31f4 feat(api): add nvim_win_resize()
Ref #6645

Problem:
When a window is resized it takes space from the window right/below first,
and only falls back to the window left/above when there is no more room.
Sometimes a user wants the space to come from a specific direction.

Solution:
Add nvim_win_resize(win, width, height, {anchor}) which resizes a window
with a choosable anchor edge, letting a window grow leftwards or upwards
by taking space from the window to the left or above first. The default
anchor reproduces nvim_win_set_width()/nvim_win_set_height().
