9edf57e665 fix(dir): custom 3P directory-browser #40725
Problem:
Third-party directory browsers do not have a documented way to take over local
directory buffers from nvim.dir.

Solution:
Document deleting the nvim.dir augroup and handling FileType directory as the
after-startup handoff, and avoid installing the built-in buffer-local "-" mapping
when "-" is already mapped.

9202e2c80c fix(dir): respect directory buffer lifetime #40453
Problem:
dir.lua leaves previously-navigated directory buffers around.
This is fine by default, but users need a simple way to opt out.

Solution:
1. Respect `set hidden` (via `'bufhidden'`) as one way to make
   previously-navigated dir buffers from showing up.
2. Document a one-liner to hide these buffers

bf917a503a feat(runtime): replace netrw with a very small script #39723
Problem:
`:edit <dir>` and `nvim <dir>` currently rely on netrw to show local directory
contents.

Solution:
- Provide `filetype=directory`.
- Introduce dir.lua, a small plugin that provides directory listing, opening
  items, parent navigation, and refresh.
- `netrw` remains available for `:Explore`, remote paths, archives, and file
  operations. To continue

7337e02563 refactor(docs): generate tui.txt $NVIM_TERMDEFS keys #39836
Problem:
Potential documentation drift in `tui.txt` if fields for
`$NVIM_TERMDEFS` change.

Solution:
Generate docs for `tui.txt`. Add `brief_xform` to `gen_vimdoc.lua` to
allow transforming briefs during generation.

59eadebe33 fix(runtime)!: move "tohtml" to pack/dist/opt/ #34557
Problem:
The "tohtml" plugin is loaded by default.

Solution:
- Move it to `pack/dist/opt/nvim.tohtml/`, it is an "opt-in" plugin now.
- Document guidelines.
- Also revert the `plugin/` locations of `spellfile.lua` and `net.lua`.
  That idea was not worth the trouble, it will be too much re-education
  for too little gain.

45b4bbac28 feat(difftool): replace old "nvim -d" automatically #38057
Problem:
"nvim -d" doesn't leverage nvim.difftool.

Solution:
If nvim.difftool was enabled via :packadd, automatically
handle "nvim -d" on startup.

    nvim -c "packadd nvim.difftool" -d dir1/ dir2/

94ae48ff29 docs(undotree): rename help tag #36497
Problem: confusing that there is the tag `undo-tree` (the Vim
implementation) and `undotree` (the Lua plugin for visualization).

Solution: rename tag to undotree-plugin. Mention the plugin in the docs of
|undotree|.

9bdb011a50 refactor(spellfile): config() interface, docs #36481
Problem:
- Exposing the raw config as table is a pattern not seen anywhere else
  in the Nvim codebase.
- Old spellfile.vim docs still available, no new documentation

Solution:
- Exposing a `config()` function that both acts as "getter" and "setter"
  is a much more common idiom (e.g. vim.lsp, vim.diagnostic).
- Add new documentation and link old docs to |spellfile.lua| instead of
  |spellfile.vim|.

88b45614e9 fix(build): gen_help_html fails #36359
Problem:
fe4faaf81a added an invalid "redirect" item, which caused the
assert() to fail, which then caused the neovim/doc/ CI to fail:
https://github.com/neovim/doc/actions/runs/18830779387/job/53721736276 :

The previous commit e69beb9b1a tried to fix a different issue, which
has gone hidden because the "invalid tags" failure has been present on
the neovim/doc/ but was silently failing.

    invalid tags: {
      ["g:netrw_keepdir"] = "usr_22.txt",
      netrw = "vi_diff.txt",
      ...
      plugins = "editorconfig"
    }

Solution:
- Fix the invalid redirect.
- Improve the redirects assertion.

c9b74f8b7e fix(difftool): ensure split layout, use systemlist #36145
- Always open the right window to the right, regardless of 'splitright'
  setting, ensuring the left window is always leftmost.
- Use `vim.fn.systemlist` for diffr output to avoid manual splitting.
- Add a test to verify window layout consistency with 'splitright' and
  'nosplitright' options.
- Escape quotes in git difftool example properly.

fec02ae8e4 feat(plugins): nvim.difftool can compare directories #35448
Problem:
Built-in diff mode (nvim -d) does not support directory diffing
as required by git difftool -d. This makes it difficult to compare
entire directories, detect renames, and navigate changes efficiently.

Solution:
Add a DiffTool plugin and command that enables side-by-side diffing of
files and directories in Neovim. The plugin supports rename detection,
highlights changes in the quickfix list, and provides a user command for
easy invocation. This allows proper integration with git difftool -d for
directory comparison.

Example git config:

```ini
[diff]
    tool = nvim_difftool
[difftool "nvim_difftool"]
    cmd = nvim -c "packadd nvim.difftool" -c "DiffTool $LOCAL $REMOTE"
```

a30a947593 docs: move editorconfig.txt into plugins.txt
It helps to have plugins living in one common area, because it signals
to users the mechanisms for controlling them, which are typically driven
by keymaps and autocmds rather than builtin options.

We can always revisit if plugins.txt gets "too big" (for example, we may
want to introduce "project.txt" for the project concept, where
editorconfig and 'exrc' are relevant), but for now it's rather unusual
for editorconfig.txt to have its own dedicated helpfile.
